Scanning is not admin. It is the constraint.
Nothing goes in the shredder until every device is accounted for. So the slowest part of the intake sets the pace of the whole floor, and the slowest part is a technician reading a label and typing it in.
- Ten seconds a device is six devices a minute, whatever else you have invested in.
- One device on the client's list that is missing from yours restarts the reconciliation.
- The overtime is visible. The job you could not schedule is not.
The number that matters is capacity, not hours saved
Time saved is a cost line. Capacity is a revenue line, and it is the one worth taking to whoever signs off the spend.
At ten seconds a device you are doing around 360 an hour at a station. At under one, against a target list, the same technician at the same station is not the bottleneck any more — the handling is.
That is a like-for-like comparison only where a target list exists, which is the normal case because your client supplies one. Without a list the serial is still read in under a second, but the operator confirms it.
What your client's auditor actually tests
Not whether you follow a standard. They pick one serial off a certificate you issued months ago and ask what happened to that device — and can you prove it.
- The capture it was read from, not a line in a spreadsheet.
- What the system read, and what your operator decided.
- The method, the date, and who confirmed it.
- A record that can be shown not to have been edited since.
A batch line cannot answer that question. Neither can a file anyone who opens it can change without the change leaving a mark.
A wrong serial is worse than a slow one
This is why the system holds a device rather than guessing. Where it is not confident, it shows your operator what it read and waits for the time you configured.
The failure mode is a device that takes a few seconds longer. It is not a destroyed asset recorded as surviving, or a surviving one recorded as destroyed — discovered eight months later, on a certificate you signed.
